11,000 Job Seekers Swarmed the VivoCity Job Fair


19 July 2006, Singapore -11,000 job seekers visited the VivoCity Job Fair held on 14 and 15 July, and a total of 15,000 job applications were received. 300 job applicants were offered employment at the Fair itself. Another 1,500 have been shortlisted, and according to the recruiters, will be offered jobs by mid-August.

"We are really very astounded by the turn out for the Job Fair," says VivoCity's General Manager, Wendy Low. "The success of the fair far exceeds our expectations. Our tenants and partners will certainly be spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting the best candidates for the various positions."

Ms Kelly Hee, Deputy Director (Healthcare, Retail and Business Services) of Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), "We are heartened by the turn-out at the VivoCity Job Fair. This shows that Singaporeans are interested in service jobs and a career in retail, and we should be able to find the manpower for exciting retail developments like the Warehouse Retail Scheme, integrated resorts, and re-making of Orchard Road. In the future, we also look forward to working with new upcoming malls to help them recruit the workers they need."

The Job Fair, which was intended to fill part of the estimated 7,000 workforce required by Singapore's largest multi-dimensional retail and lifestyle destination when it opens in October 2006, was organised by Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd (the developer of VivoCity) and WDA. It featured a diverse array of retail and service frontline openings such as Sales/Customer Service Associates, Bartenders, Make up Artists, Manicurists, Hair Assistants and Crews, as well as professional, managerial and executivs jobs such as Shop Manager, Beauty Consultants, Optometrists and Sous Chefs.

The recruitment drive will continue. Interested job seekers can call WDA's hotline 6883 5885 to indicate their area of interest and WDA will follow up on their applications and, where necessary, invite them to relevant job placement efforts.

20 year old Siti Ariza Bte Abdul Razab, was offered a job by Bossini as a Sales Assistant on 14 July and started work the next day at Bossini's Ngee Ann City outlet. "This is my first job and I have always wanted to work in the retail industry. I am very happy to be offered a job immediately and be given the opportunity to be trained on-the-job before moving over to Bossini's new VivoCity shop."

48-year-old Ivy Teo has been taking up jobs mainly in the administration area for 15 years before deciding to join the retail sector. Her previous job experience includes working as a Dental Assistant and a Teacher's Assistant. Being a strong advocate for service excellence, Ivy Teo is enthusiastic about developing a career in retail. "I am extremely interested in a job that allows me to contribute to customer service. That is why I chose to work in retail," says a delighted Ivy who has managed to secure a job as a frontline sales personnel with Esprit at the VivoCity Job Fair held on 14 and 15 July.

Page One the Bookshop's 100 job vacancies were over-applied by 12 times (1,200 applications were submitted over the two days). Mr Matthew Loo, its Regional Manager (Human Resource & Administration) shared, "We are in the midst of shortlisting and selecting at least 100 staff. We are looking for people who truly love books and can help us bring the books to life! We plan to do this within the next two weeks and commence training from mid-September, so that we are ready to value add to our customers when our 28,000 sq ft store in VivoCity opens in October."

Tangs, who had a good mix of candidates from fresh graduates to mature candidates, has shortlisted 167 for various positions such as Fashion Associates, Security Officers, Cashiers and Customer Service Associates. "The job fair is a timely initiative by WDA and VivoCity. As retailers, we see synergy in coming together to promote retailing as a career of choice and make a greater impact on the job seekers. Developing talent has always been Tangs' priority and the job fair has enabled us to reach out to new talents." Says Mr Tan Boon Tuck, Head Singapore Business of C. K. Tang Limited.
