GUILT-FREE MOONCAKES: PUTTING AN END TO THE STRUGGLE OF INDULGENCE
20 Sep,2017 | FOOD

With adopting healthy eating habits being the in-thing right now, it’s no wonder that more of our favourite mooncake brands are putting out healthier options to give us more reason to indulge in delicious mooncakes. To put these healthier alternatives to the test, we head to the TANGS Mid-Autumn Fair and visited 4 brands offering either sugar-free or reduced sugar mooncakes to see if the mooncakes are well-worth our calories.

1) Chocoelf

As the only brand offering sugar-free mooncakes, Chocoelf prides itself in making mooncakes that everyone can enjoyl, including diabetics and the elderly.

We were initially skeptical about how sugar-free mooncakes would taste but were reassured that while no sugar is used, a natural sweetener known as Maltitol, extracted from wheat and corn, is added to provide sweetness to the mooncakes. True to their claim, all of theirmooncakes tasted rich and flavourful, nothing of the blandness we expected from sugar-free mooncakes.

While Chocoelf offers both traditional baked and snowskin mooncakes, our hearts were won over by their Sugar-Free Lotus Paste & Passion Fruit Truffle Yolk snowskin mooncake; our taste buds were greeted by the tanginess of passion fruit at first bite, providing a delightful pop of flavour before rounding off with the warm, sweet notes of the lotus paste.

2) Peach Garden

There are a wide array of mooncake flavours available at Peach Garden but when it came to reduced sugar options, the selection was narrowed down to 4 flavours – all from their baked mooncakes collection.

A notable difference, we were told, was that the mooncakes were sweetened with trehalose (a sweetener made from seaweed) instead of regular sugar, to provide health-conscious folks like us with a healthier option without sacrificing the taste of their mooncakes.

Of the 4 reduced sugar mooncakes we tasted, their Premium Reduced Sugar White Lotus Paste with Macadamia Nuts mooncake stood out from the pack with the mildly sweet lotus paste complemented by the robust crunchiness of whole macadamia nuts.

3) The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore

Having gotten our hands on their mooncake catalogue beforehand, we made a beeline straight for their new White Lotus Seed Paste with Five Grains mooncake that’s chockfull of pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, sesame seeds and oats; this mooncake is so dense with nuts that it could be a meal on its own! While all of The Ritz-Carlton’s mooncakes are made with less sugar, we can’t help but feel that the generous serving of nuts and oats makes this healthier than the rest.

4) Long Jiang

A familiar name in the realm of mooncakes, Long Jiang strives to provide a taste of tradition but with less sugar so that we can enjoy our favourite mooncakes, minus the post-indulgence guilt.

A crowd-pleaser is their reduced sugar Authentic Single Egg Yolk Crispy Yam Paste Mooncake, bringing a healthier twist to their top-seller since its creation in 1988. Taste-wise, it pulls its weight against the fully loaded version; the light pastry crust paves the way for their creamy sweet yam paste, before topping things off with the single yolk, giving the mooncake an additional burst of flavour.

If you’re looking to try out these guilt-free options this Mid-Autumn, you can find them at the TANGS Mid-Autumn Fair, ongoing at VivoCity’s Central Court from now till 4 October 2017.
